It is different from coconut milk. It is only found in young coconuts, for as the coconut grows, the coconut water is replaced by the meat of the fruit and air. It has been, for a long time, a very popular beverage in the tropics and has recently become more popular in the states, as it's delicious and naturally fat free and low in calories. There are many flavors of coconut water, but regular is generally preferred. It has a subtly sweet taste and appears a little cloudy than a regular class of water.

Coconut water is very popular in the United States as a healthier alternative to energy drinks. It's sold in health food stores such as Whole Foods and Trader Joes. Coconut water is also starting to pop up at big chain supermarkets and smaller bodegas, especially around big cities like New York and Los Angeles. It's become rather trendy as of late and there are a few excellent brands of coconut water available. They are chock full of electrolites and other vitamins and minerals that are extremely beneficial to your health. The flavored coconut water generally has a lot of sugar, but unflavored coconut water is low in sugar and therefore low in calories. It's a great replacement if you don't like water since it hydrates and replenishes. This is why it's beginning to be used by a lot of athletes, particularly those who practice yoga. It's considered an alternative to energy drinks, but is in itself an energy drink.

Coconut water has been given nicknames such as "nature's sports drink" and with good reason. It actually does compare to other energy drinks. Coconut water might not be high in calories or sugar, but it hydrates you unlike anything else and gives you the boost you need. Not only is it good for sports, coconut water is also a great refreshing beverage anytime of the day. There's nothing better than a tall glass of coconut water on a hot summer day. Instead of packing your cooler with sodas for a day at the beach, why not pack it with coconut water.

Next article: Health benefits of coconut water.
